Corporate citizenship

Building an ethics program

A practical, right-sized ethics program for a young venture — code of conduct, reporting channels, training, and accountability that grow with the company.

Why ethics belongs in the plan

Corporate citizenship is how you give back; ethics is how you behave while earning. Investors, partners, and employees increasingly test both, and ethical lapses are among the fastest ways young companies fail.

Core components

Even a five-person team can put these in place in a week.

  • Values statement and code of conduct in plain language
  • Conflict-of-interest, gifts, and anti-bribery policies
  • Data privacy and customer-honesty standards
  • Fair treatment, anti-harassment, and supplier conduct rules

Speak-up and reporting

Provide a safe, ideally anonymous, channel to raise concerns, a promise of no retaliation, and a named person or board member responsible for investigating.

Training and leadership

Ethics culture is set by founders. Cover the code at onboarding, discuss real dilemmas quarterly, and model the behaviour you expect — especially under pressure to hit numbers.

Accountability and review

Log issues and resolutions, report to the board annually, and update policies as you enter new markets or adopt AI. As you grow, consider independent audits or certifications such as B Corp.
